Founded by a group of Lowcountry moms, The Sandbox is an interactive children’s museum that focuses on helping kids develop social skills and physical abilities. Each exhibit at The Sandbox is designed to enhance children’s development through interactive play. This interactive play-based learning is a great way to keep young brains on track to develop advanced adult skills. The museum offers a variety of play areas, including a three-dimensional holographic sand table, a 48-inch saltwater aquarium, an airplane flight simulator, a model shrimp boat, and a sea turtle display.
The museum also offers a special STEAM activity for kids at 3 PM. This activity is designed to encourage creative problem-solving, imagination, and critical thinking skills. There is also a kinetic sand table, a pirate ship, a two-story “sandcastle,” a model train track, a grocery store, a puppet theater, and a race track for toy cars.
The Sandbox Children’s Museum has two locations on Hilton Head Island. The museum has a 4,000-square-foot building, and features a variety of exhibits, including a kinetic sand table, an airplane flight simulator, and a model shrimp boat. This facility is great for children eight and younger, and features fun and interactive displays that reflect the island’s culture. A two-story “sandcastle” is the center of the museum.
There is also an indoor play area called “Adventure Cove,” which is open seven days a week. This facility features arcade games, a cafe/kitchen, and arts and crafts areas. The Sandbox Children’s Museum also offers Family Friday Nights, where admission is free from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. during June through August. The Family Friday Nights program also features a bounce house and giant blue building blocks. Children can also enjoy live music and entertainment. The Sandbox Children’s Museum is staffed with women with early childhood education, fine arts, and Montessori backgrounds. They lead a board of directors and work one-on-one with Sandbox families. They also run the Museum’s summer camp for children three to ten.
