The house itself is a good example of the Carolina Farmhouse style, the building’s interior walls consisting of wide heart pine boards. It was one of eight homes to survive the Union Army’s occupation of Bluffton in 1863, making it a prime example of the early days of Bluffton. In 1867, the house was purchased by the Heyward family. The house served as a vacation home for the family for the next twenty years. After the family sold the house, they moved to Texas. It was sold to the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society in 1997, which then converted it into a museum. In the process, the house was rated as one of the most impressive houses in the state. It’s been lovingly restored, and it’s not hard to see why.
The museum’s most impressive feat is the display of artifacts that span the entire history of Bluffton. The museum’s collection of artifacts includes a slew of early 19th century antiques, a collection of early American furniture, a collection of Civil War artifacts, and even an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. It also has a surprisingly large library of historical documents and photographs, and it is one of the few museums in the country to maintain such an extensive collection of books and other documents. There are also some great educational programs on offer at the museum, including guided tours of the town’s historic district, and lectures on everything from the history of Bluffton to its famous antebellum houses. There are also special events and fundraisers throughout the year, making it a worthwhile stop on your next visit to Bluffton. Up next is The Sandbox Children’s Museum
The Heyward House Museum and Welcome Center is a must-see for history buffs and nerds alike. It’s also the perfect place to start your trip to Bluffton, and the official Welcome Center of the town.
